Conventional granular fertilizers, by contrast, rely on the soil itself to do part of the job. Moisture, soil microbes and time slowly release the nutrient from the granule. This works well and has fed generations of farms, but it is a slower, less controllable process, and a portion of the nutrient can be lost to runoff, fixation in the soil, or uneven spreading before it ever reaches the root zone.

Where each one fits

Granular, conventional fertilizers are usually the base dose — applied at land preparation or basal stage, when a crop needs a steady, longer-duration supply of nutrients and the field is being irrigated normally. They are straightforward to handle, store well, and don't need any special equipment.

Water-soluble fertilizers earn their place at the stages where timing matters more than volume — early root establishment, flower initiation, fruit set, or when a crop shows a visible deficiency and needs a fast, targeted correction. Because they dissolve fully, they are also the only practical option for drip irrigation systems and fertigation, where any undissolved particle can clog emitters.

It is rarely an either/or choice

In practice, most well-managed farms use both. A conventional basal dose builds the foundation, and water-soluble grades are layered in at the stages where the crop needs a specific nutrient — phosphorus at transplanting, potassium as fruit develops, calcium through the fruiting window. Thinking of water-soluble fertilizers as a replacement for the entire program usually isn't necessary; thinking of them as a precision tool for the stages that matter most is closer to how they are actually used in the field.
