Fertigation is a fairly simple idea dressed up in a technical-sounding word — it just means delivering fertilizer through the same drip system that delivers water. Instead of broadcasting granules across a field and hoping rain or irrigation carries them down to the root zone, the nutrient is dissolved and sent directly to where the roots already are, through the emitters, on a schedule the grower controls.
Why solubility isn't optional here
Drip emitters have very small openings, often less than a millimetre. Any fertilizer that doesn't dissolve completely — even a small amount of insoluble filler — can settle inside the lines or clog an emitter outright. This is the main reason fertigation depends on fully water-soluble fertilizer grades rather than conventional granular ones, which are designed to dissolve slowly in soil, not completely and quickly in a tank of water.
It's also why growers moving from broadcast application to fertigation for the first time sometimes run into blocked drippers — usually traced back to a fertilizer that wasn't fully soluble, or to mixing incompatible fertilizers in the same tank, which can cause a reaction and form precipitates.
A basic fertigation routine
- Dissolve the required fertilizer fully in a stock tank before it enters the irrigation line
- Avoid mixing calcium-based and phosphate/sulphate-based fertilizers in the same stock solution — they can react and precipitate
- Run plain water briefly at the start and end of each fertigation cycle to flush the lines
- Adjust the NPK grade to the crop stage rather than using one grade throughout the season
- Check emitters periodically for blockage, especially after switching fertilizer grades
What fertigation is actually good for
The real advantage isn't just convenience — it's control. Because nutrients can be applied in smaller, more frequent doses matched to the crop's stage, fertigation tends to reduce the swings between nutrient excess and deficiency that come with a few large broadcast applications. It also fits naturally with a stage-wise nutrition plan: a phosphorus-heavy grade at establishment, a balanced grade through vegetative growth, and potassium- or calcium-focused grades as the crop moves toward flowering and fruiting.
